What are Gemstones?

Gemstones, known as "Ratna" in Sanskrit, play a significant role in Jyotish, which is the traditional Indian system of astrology. In Jyotish, gemstones are believed to harness specific planetary energies and influence the wearer's life positively by aligning with the cosmic forces. Each gemstone is associated with a particular planet and is believed to enhance the qualities associated with that planet while mitigating its negative effects.

The concept of gemstones in Jyotish is deeply rooted in ancient Vedic texts, such as the "Garuda Purana" and the "Agni Purana," which provide guidelines for selecting and wearing gemstones based on astrological considerations. The most authoritative text on gemstones in Jyotish is the "Ratna Pariksha" by King Bhoja, which outlines the properties of various gemstones and their effects on planetary influences.

Jyotish practitioners prescribe gemstones based on an individual's birth chart, also known as the "Kundli" or "Horoscope." The placement and alignment of planets at the time of birth influence various aspects of a person's life, and gemstones are recommended to balance or enhance these influences.

Wearing a gemstone is believed to enhance one's health, wealth, and overall well-being, as well as provide protection from malefic planetary influences. However, it is essential to consult a knowledgeable Jyotish practitioner before wearing any gemstone, as improper selection or wearing without proper analysis may lead to adverse effects.

The efficacy of gemstone therapy in Jyotish is a matter of faith and belief, and its practice continues to be an integral part of traditional Indian astrology, influencing the lives of many individuals seeking cosmic harmony and balance.

According to Jyotish, each planet governs specific aspects of life and has its corresponding gemstone. The nine primary gemstones associated with the nine planets in Jyotish are

The verses explain what Navaratnas mean

Ruby (known as Manik, Manikam, or Manek) is dedicated to Surya (Sun)

Pearl (known as Muthu or Moti) is dedicated to Chandra (Moon)

Red Coral (known as Moonga or Pavalam) is dedicated to Kuja / Mangala / Sevvai (Mars)

Emerald (known as Panna, Marakatha, Marakatham, or Marakatha Pachai) is dedicated to Budha (Mercury)

Yellow Sapphire (known as Pukharaj or Pushparagam) is dedicated to Guru / Brihaspati (Jupiter)

White Diamond (known as Vairam or Heera) is dedicated to Shukra (Venus)

Blue Sapphire (known as Nilam or Neelam) is dedicated to Shani (Saturn)

Hessonite (known as Gomedh or Gomedham) is dedicated to Rahu (the ascending node of the Moon)

Cat’s Eye (known as Vaidurya or Vaiduryam) is dedicated to Kethu (the descending node of the Moon)

Also, these gems must be high born, clean, and free from defects as well as minor cracks (flawless).

In the above verses too, the words “sujatyam-amalam” (sujati meaning high born and amala meaning completely pure or flawless) are of great importance. According to Indians, only clean, flawless, and high-quality gems are considered auspicious.

Apart from that, the ancient “Garuda Purana” (chapter 68; verse 17) states

“Pure, clean, and flawless gems have auspicious powers which can protect an individual from demons, snakes, poisons, diseases, sinful reactions, and other dangers; while the flawed stones have the opposite effect on an individual.”

And on “Agni Purana” (chapter 247; verses 7)

“A gem free from all impurities and radiating its characteristic through an internal shine and lustre should be looked upon as an escort of good luck and a gem which is cracked, fissured, devoid of shine and lustre or appearing rough and sandy, must not be used at all.”

During the earlier days, only the Indians (and those with ancient-Indo ties like Sri Lankans, Thais, Burmese, and Indonesians) were very fond of Navaratna jewelleries but, today, the Navaratna gemstones and jewelleries are being sought after globally as it is highly believed to be auspicious to the wearer. Even, the native Red Indians have a brief history pertaining to Navaratna. However, in modern times, many have misunderstood the term “Navaratna” and have substituted the originally classified precious gemstones with semi-precious crystals as the cost of a so-called “semi-precious Navaratna” are very much cheaper than Navaratna gems that consist of Ruby, Pearl, Red Coral, Emerald, Yellow Sapphire, Diamond, Blue Sapphire, Hessonite, and Cat’s Eye. Keep in mind that a Navaratna is never a single gemstone. A single gemstone is called by its own name like Diamond, Pink Sapphire, Pink Pearl, etc.

 Navratna Gemstones

Navaratna, Navratna, Navratn, Navarathinam, or Navarathna literally means nine gems. “Nava” meaning “nine” and “Ratna” meaning “gem”. Literatures on Navaratna or nine gemstones can be traced back to our ancient vedic scriptures such as the Garuda Purana and Agni Purana. As a matter of fact, a number of new-era jyotish scriptures such as the “Brihat Jataka” and “Mani Mala” have revived the importance of Navaratna (nine gemstones). The Navaratna is said to symbolize the ancient solar system consisting of Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune (excluding Earth and Pluto of the modern-times’ solar system). Generally, when an astrologer tells you to wear a Navaratna, that means you have to wear all the nine gemstones together either as a ring, bracelet, bangle, necklace, earrings, or pendant

Who can wear Navaratna Gemstones?

According to Vedic astrology scriptures the following are given:

  1. Men can wear Navaratna Gemstones.

  2. Married Men must not wear Navaratna Gemstones after dusk.

  3. Ladies must not wear Navaratna Gemstones unless their birth chart and horoscope indicate otherwise.

  4. Boys below the age of 8 years, must not wear Navaratna Gemstones.

  5. Men can wear the Navaratna ring on their right hand and on ring finger.

  6. Ladies who has been prescribed by a learned vedic astrologer to wear Navaratna, can wear it on their ring finger of the left hand.

  7. It is highly suggested that, you should not wear the Navaratna ring, pendant, bracelet, and bangle while attending a funeral, during mourning period, while attending puberty function, et cetera.

  8. One should also avoid wearing the ring while eating meat and while going to the toilet.

  9. Ladies should not wear it during their menstrual cycles and pregnancies.

The Navaratna can be worn with gold, silver, of panchaloga (five metals). Avoid wearing it with copper. Avoid wearing them below

How to wear Navaratna Gemstones?

Once you have purchased a Navaratna ring, bracelet, bangle, or a pendant free from defects, you will have to cleanse (shuddhi) it first before wearing it and the procedures are as given below:

  1. Wash it with water to remove any grease and dust attached to it. After that, you can also wash it with Ganga Jal (water from the Ganges).

  2. Soak it in pure cow’s milk overnight. Some scriptures suggest soaking the Navaratna jewellery in Panchagavya / Panchakavya (mixture of cow’s milk, ghee, cow dung, cow urine/komayam, and butter) for 9 thithi days. However, nowadays it is very rare to get pure panchagavya materials (some tend to have inorganic materials and chemicals) and therefore, we do not advise you to soak it for 9 days.

  3. Next day, bring it to a temple and wash it with the holy water given in temple (preferably, abhisheka water).

  4. Chant all the Navagraha Gayatri Mantra (Surya, Chandra, Angara, Budha, Brihaspathi, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, and Kethu) and then wear it. Wearing it in a temple with God’s blessings is considered very auspicious.

  5. You must wear the Navaratna on an auspicious day according to your birth star (Nakshatra). The planetary Hora of that time must be auspicious too. Full Moon Day (Purnima / Pournami) is considered a very good day to wear the Navaratna ring or Navaratna pendant or Navaratna bracelet. Some astrologers would advise you to wear the ring before sunrise.

  6. You should never wear a Navaratna or any one of the nine gems classified as Navaratna below the waist. Nowadays, jewellery designers have come up with Navaratna Anklets et cetera, wearing them will only bestow the wearer with ill effects and increase your doshas.

  7. The Diamond in a Navaratna ring should always point outwards (towards your nail) and the Blue Sapphire must always point inwards (towards your knuckles / body).

  8. If you are wearing a Navaratna pendant, the diamond should be pointing upwards (towards your neck) and the blue sapphire pointing downwards (towards your chest)

  9. Once you have cleansed and energized the Navaratna gemstones, make sure that you do not allow another person to touch the stone as their energies (especially, negative energies) might be absorbed by the gemstones which will then cause adverse effect to you. However, close family members like spouse, kids, and parents might accidentally touch the gemstones and this should not be an issue.

Cleansing them on bi-weekly basis or once a month is advised. One can also cleanse the negative energies absorbed by the gemstones via healing crystal bowl once a month

Characteristics of Gemstones

Gemstones are precious or semi-precious minerals that, when cut and polished, are used for various ornamental and astrological purposes. When buying gemstones, the buyer must consider several factors to ensure the authenticity, quality, and suitability of the gemstone. Here are the main characteristics and considerations for buyers

1. COLOUR: - The colour of a gemstone is one of the most critical factors. Different gemstones exhibit a wide range of colours, and each type has its grading criteria. - Buyers should consider the intensity, hue, and tone of the colour. For example, a deep, vibrant red is often more valuable in rubies, while sapphires are valued for their rich blue colour. -- Intensity: The intensity of colour is crucial. For example, in diamonds, a deep and intense colour, such as Fancy Vivid, is more valuable. However, in some coloured gemstones like emeralds, a medium to medium-dark tone is often preferred. -- Hue and Tone: The hue refers to the gem's basic colour (e.g., red, blue, green), while tone describes how light or dark the colour appears. Striking the right balance is essential for the gem's overall visual appeal. - Most gemstones have little beauty in the rough state, they may look like ordinary rocks or pebbles, but after a skilled cutting and polishing the full colour and lustre can be seen - Saturation and Tone Consistency: A high-quality gemstone should have consistent colour saturation throughout the stone. Any unevenness may indicate treatment or lower quality. - Undertones: Some gemstones have subtle undertones. Evaluating these undertones is crucial; for instance, blue sapphires may have undertones of green or violet. - Fluorescence: Gemmologists often use ultraviolet light to detect fluorescence in gemstones. Certain gemstones may exhibit fluorescence, influencing their perceived colour under different lighting conditions. - Colour Zoning: Experienced gemmologists carefully examine gemstones for colour zoning, irregular distribution of colour within the stone, which can impact its overall appearance. - Planetary Influence: Astrological experts consider the specific planetary influence associated with each gemstone colour. The vibrancy and harmony of the colour with the corresponding planet are essential for astrological effectiveness. - Transparency and Clarity for Energy Flow: A seasoned astrological expert may emphasize the importance of transparency and clarity in gemstones to ensure a smooth flow of energy from the gem to the wearer, aligning with astrological principles. - Colour Change and Planetary Transits: In certain astrological traditions, gemstone colour change is associated with specific planetary transits. A gemstone may exhibit unique colour variations during certain celestial events, making it particularly potent during those times

2. CLARITY: - Clarity refers to the presence of any internal flaws (inclusions) or external blemishes (blemishes) in the gemstone. - Inclusions can affect the overall appearance and brilliance of the gem. The fewer and less visible the inclusions, the higher the clarity grade. - The nature, size, and location of inclusions impact a gemstone's clarity. Some inclusions, like needles in sapphires or the "jardin" in emeralds, are acceptable and even prized. However, visible flaws can diminish the gem's value - Type and Visibility of Inclusions: Not all inclusions are created equal. Dark, visible inclusions can significantly impact a gemstone's brilliance, while minor inclusions may not be noticeable to the naked eye. - Impact on Durability: Consider how inclusions may affect the gemstone's durability. For instance, surface-reaching fractures may make a gem more susceptible to damage. - Growth Patterns: Gemmologists assess the internal growth patterns of crystals within gemstones to distinguish between natural inclusions and potential signs of treatments or enhancements. - Fingerprint Inclusions: Some gemstones, like emeralds, may contain unique fingerprint-like inclusions that are characteristic of the gem's formation - Purity and Planetary Harmony: Astrologers may associate the clarity of a gemstone with the purity of the planetary energy it represents. A clear gemstone is believed to better resonate with and transmit the beneficial energies of the associated planet. - Natural Inclusions as Planetary Markings: Some astrologers view certain inclusions as planetary markings, considering them as unique signatures that enhance the gemstone's astrological influence. - Sacred Geometry and Inclusions: Some gemmologists with esoteric knowledge delve into the concept of sacred geometry within gemstone inclusions. Certain patterns or formations within the gemstone may be seen as aligning with sacred geometric principles, enhancing the gem's spiritual significance

3. CUT: - The cut of a gemstone refers to its shape, proportions, and facets. A well-cut gemstone reflects light effectively, enhancing its overall appearance. - A precise cut also affects the gem's brilliance, fire, and sparkle. The cut should be proportional to the gemstone type and its inherent qualities. - Proportions: Gemstones must be cut with precision to maximize their brilliance. Proportions, including table size, crown height, and pavilion depth, affect how light interacts with the gem. - Faceting: The number and arrangement of facets influence a gemstone's sparkle. A well-cut gemstone reflects light back to the viewer's eye in an appealing manner. - Symmetry and Precision: Look for precise symmetry in the facets and overall shape. Minor asymmetry can affect how light reflects within the gemstone. - Brilliance and Scintillation: Assess the gemstone's brilliance (white light reflection) and scintillation (sparkle or play of light). A well-cut gemstone should exhibit both in optimal proportions. - Windowing and Extinction: Gemmologists pay attention to the presence of a "window" (lack of brilliance in the centre) or "extinction" (areas without light return). These issues can arise from improper cutting. - Critical Angle: Knowledge of a gemstone's critical angle allows gemmologists to assess how well it retains and reflects light, impacting its brilliance. - Symbolic Shapes: Astrological experts may pay attention to the symbolic significance of the gemstone's cut. For instance, a well-cut gemstone in a shape associated with a particular planet could enhance its astrological efficacy. - Facet Alignment and Planetary Alignment: The alignment of facets may be correlated with the positioning of planets in a birth chart. An expert may consider whether the cut aligns with the wearer's planetary positions for optimal effects. - Astrological Yantra Cuts: In Vedic astrology, gemstones are sometimes cut into specific geometrical shapes known as Yantras, each associated with a particular planet. These unique cuts are believed to amplify the gemstone's astrological energies and influence

4. CARAT WEIGHT: - Carat is a unit of weight for gemstones, and larger stones generally have a higher carat weight. - Buyers should consider the carat weight with the other factors. A larger gemstone may have more value, but a smaller, high-quality gem can be equally desirable. - Size vs. Quality: While carat weight contributes to a gemstone's value, size alone should not be the sole factor. Smaller stones with excellent colour and clarity can be more valuable than larger ones with visible flaws. - Face-Up Size: Consider the visible size of the gemstone when viewed from the top (face-up). Sometimes, a shallower cut may make a gemstone appear larger than its carat weight suggests. - Rare Sizes: Unusual carat weights (e.g., 1.50 instead of 1.00) may offer better value, as they are less common and may be priced more competitively. - Proportions and Spread: Experienced gemmologists consider the proportions of a gemstone to determine its face-up size. Well-cut gemstones with optimal proportions may appear larger than their carat weight suggests. - Dispersion and Fire: In certain gemstones like diamonds, the dispersion of light into spectral colours (fire) is influenced by the cut, affecting the gem's overall beauty. - Astrological Significance of Size: Astrologers may associate the size of a gemstone with the strength of its astrological influence. Larger gemstones are thought to have a more pronounced impact on the individual's energy fields. - Custom Sizing for Personalized Effects: Some astrological experts may recommend custom sizing based on an individual's birth chart, aligning with specific astrological considerations for optimal benefits. - Numerological Significance: Beyond traditional astrological considerations, gemmologists with a penchant for numerology may explore the numeric vibrations associated with the gemstone's carat weight. Certain weights may be considered particularly auspicious based on numerological principles. - The hardness of a stone is the only factor in determining gem durability. It indicates the stone’s resistance to scratching and abrasions, or how the surface of the gem will respond to contact with a sharp point. The Mohs Scale rates the hardness of gems and minerals on a relative scale of 1 (softest – Talc) to 10 (hardest – Diamond). Introduced in 1822, the scale originated when Friedrich Mohs chose ten minerals and assigned numbers to them based on the relative ease or difficulty with which one can be scratched by another

5. ORIGIN: - Gemstone origin can significantly impact its value and rarity. Some locations are renowned for producing specific gem varieties of exceptional quality. - For instance, Kashmir is famous for its high-quality sapphires, and Burma (Myanmar) is renowned for producing fine rubies. - Geographical Significance: Certain origins are renowned for specific gemstone qualities. For example, Burmese rubies are esteemed for their vivid red colour, while Colombian emeralds are prized for their rich green hue. Origin can significantly influence market value. - Specific Mines: Certain mines within a region may produce gemstones of exceptional quality. Knowing the specific mine can provide insights into the gemstone's characteristics. - Geopolitical Factors: Political instability in certain regions can impact the availability and price of gemstones from those areas. - Trace Elements: Gemmologists may use advanced spectroscopy to identify trace elements within gemstones, aiding in determining their origin. This is particularly important for gemstones like sapphires and rubies. - Gemstone Inclusions Database: Experienced gemmologists rely on extensive databases of inclusions specific to certain gemstone varieties and locations to aid in origin determination. - Planetary Associations with Origins: Astrologers may associate specific geographical origins with enhanced planetary energies. They might recommend gemstones from certain locations based on astrological compatibility. - Energies Infused by Earth: The geological conditions of a gemstone's origin may be seen as contributing to the infusion of specific energies from the Earth, aligning with astrological principles. - Planetary Ley Lines: Some esoteric perspectives involve the concept of planetary ley lines, suggesting that gemstones sourced from specific geographic points where these energy lines intersect carry enhanced planetary energies. This adds a rare dimension to the astrological significance of the gemstone's origin

6. TREATMENT: - Many gemstones undergo treatments to enhance their colour and clarity. Common treatments include heating, irradiation, and filling of surface-reaching fractures. - Buyers should be informed about any treatments the gemstone has undergone and how these treatments may affect its long-term durability and value. - Common Treatments: Heat treatment is widespread, especially for sapphires and rubies, to enhance colour. Buyers should be aware of treatments and their impact on long-term durability and value. - Disclosure: Ethical sellers disclose any treatments the gemstone has undergone. Advanced gemmological reports detail the presence of treatments and their effects. - Level of Treatment: Understand the extent of any treatment. For example, a slight heat treatment may be acceptable for certain gemstones, but excessive treatments can diminish value. - Stability of Treatment: Consider the long-term stability of the treatment. Some treatments may fade or change over time, affecting the gemstone's appearance. - Microscopic Examination: Gemmologists use high-powered microscopes to examine gemstones for evidence of treatments. This includes identifying characteristic features such as healed fractures or residue from heat treatment. - Ultraviolet Testing: Some treatments, like irradiation, may be detected through ultraviolet testing, revealing changes in fluorescence that are not visible under normal light. - Energetic Impact of Treatments: Astrologers may assess the energetic impact of gemstone treatments. Some treatments may be considered to enhance or diminish the gemstone's astrological properties. - Karmic Considerations: Astrological experts may consider karmic considerations related to gemstone treatments, examining whether treated gemstones are suitable for specific individuals based on their karmic imprints. - Celestial Timing of Treatments: Rarely known is the consideration of celestial timing for gemstone treatments. Gemmologists may choose specific planetary hours or auspicious celestial configurations for treating gemstones, believing it enhances their energetic properties.

7. CERTIFICATION: - Reputable gemstones are often accompanied by certificates from recognized gemmological laboratories. These certificates provide details about the gemstone's characteristics and any treatments it has undergone. - Gemstone certificates help buyers make informed decisions and provide a level of assurance regarding the gem's authenticity. - Gemmological Laboratories: Certificates from reputable laboratories like GIA (Gemmological Institute of America), AGS (American Gem Society), or IGI (International Gemmological Institute) provide an unbiased assessment of a gemstone's quality. - Detailed Information: Certificates include information on colour, clarity, cut, carat weight, treatments, and dimensions, aiding buyers in making informed decisions. - Detailed Reports: In addition to standard certificates, seek more detailed reports for high-value gemstones. Advanced testing methods, such as spectroscopy, can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the gemstone's properties. - Third-Party Verification: Ensure that the certificate comes from an independent, reputable laboratory to avoid conflicts of interest. - Laboratory Reputation: Gemmologists are familiar with the reputations of different gemmological laboratories. Laboratories with stringent standards and consistent grading practices are considered more reliable. - Updated Testing Techniques: Experienced gemmologists are aware of the latest testing techniques employed by laboratories, ensuring they can interpret certificates accurately. - Energetic Validation: A seasoned astrological expert may use certification not only as a validation of the gemstone's physical attributes but also as a confirmation of its energetic alignment with the associated planet. - Planetary Programming: Some experts may perform rituals or ceremonies to attune the gemstone to the wearer's energy, enhancing its astrological effectiveness beyond its physical characteristics. - Astrological Codification on Certificates: In unique cases, gemmological certificates may include astrological codifications or symbols that convey specific energetic attributes. These symbols could provide additional insights into the gemstone's compatibility with an individual's astrological profile.

8. COMPATIBILITY WITH ASTROLOGY (IF APPLICABLE): - If purchasing a gemstone for astrological purposes, it's crucial to consult with a qualified astrologer or gemmologist. The gemstone should align with the wearer's birth chart and astrological considerations. - Astrological Consultation: Consult with a qualified astrologer or gemmologist to determine the most suitable gemstone based on the individual's birth chart. Each gemstone is associated with specific planetary energies and wearing the right one is believed to bring astrological benefits. - Precision in Birth Chart Analysis: Gemstones in astrology are chosen based on specific positions of planets in the birth chart. An accurate and detailed analysis by a skilled astrologer is crucial. - Consideration of Doshas: In Vedic astrology, gemstone recommendations may also consider the balance of doshas (energies) associated with specific planets. - Planetary Alignments: A gemmologist with astrological knowledge may consider the specific planetary positions and astrological conditions when recommending gemstones for clients. Astrologers carefully examine the gemstone's alignment with the wearer's birth chart, ensuring that it resonates with the specific planetary influences relevant to the individual. - Energy and Vibration: Some experienced gemmologists who integrate metaphysical aspects into their practice may assess a gemstone's energy and vibrational qualities in alignment with astrological beliefs. - Timing Considerations: There may be specific times or astrological periods during which a gemstone is considered more potent.
